Free Liminal Space Games You Can Play in a Browser

Empty places that feel familiar, and wrong.

A liminal space is a place built for passing through — a hotel corridor, an empty mall, a swimming pool after hours — seen when nobody is passing through it. The feeling is specific: you have been somewhere exactly like this, and something about being here now is wrong. These four games are built around that feeling rather than around a monster, and all of them run in the browser with no download.

The picks

STILLHOUR

Everything looks normal. Nothing is normal.

Free liminal-space horror game. An empty hotel at 3:17 AM that rearranges itself when you are not looking, and a pool below it. First person, no download.

VACATED: The Mall

After hours, after closing, after everything.

Free browser game. Explore a mall evacuated in 1998 the night before demolition, past private security, and photograph what happened. PS1 style.

The Showroom

The neighborhood is indoors.

Free browser escape game. You wake in a cul-de-sac built inside a warehouse. Work the office, three model homes and the mailboxes to get out. No download.

Tranquility

Suit up. Cycle the airlock. Get off the rock.

Free browser escape game. Solve four lockers for an EVA suit, cross a real lunar surface on a ticking oxygen tank, and reach the lander. No download.

STILLHOUR is the one made for it. A hotel at 3:17 in the morning, lit and clean and ready for a guest, with music from a floor you are not on and a card at the front desk that already knows your name. Everything in it looks normal. It is not: the building rearranges itself whenever you are not looking, a corridor is longer when you come back out of a room, and a door that opened onto one room opens onto another. Below it is a bright indoor pool with perfectly still water and daylight in the windows. It is an original game, not a Backrooms game, though people who like that corner of the internet tend to find it.

VACATED: The Mall is the dead mall — a 1990s shopping centre evacuated the Saturday before Christmas 1998 and never reopened, dinners still on the trays in the food court. It is the one with a mystery to solve and people to avoid: you photograph what happened while two security guards walk their rounds.

The Showroom is the smallest and the strangest: a residential cul-de-sac built indoors, inside a warehouse, with astroturf lawns, a painted sky wall and foam clouds hanging on wires. Nothing hunts you there. Tranquility is the loneliest: a domed moon base with everyone gone, lockers to solve and an airlock to cycle, and a walk across grey regolith to a lander on a clock.

Start with STILLHOUR if you want the feeling at full strength, VACATED if you want a story to piece together, The Showroom if you have ten minutes, and Tranquility if you would rather be alone on the Moon than in a building.
