Survive the haunting
Play Midnight Manor — free, in your browser
Explore a haunted mansion in this retro overhead adventure. Find keys to unlock doors, discover secrets, and avoid the ghosts and monsters lurking in every shadow. Can you find the escape key and make it out alive?
You wake up outside a locked mansion. Your only way out is to find the Escape Key hidden deep inside.
First, find the front door key somewhere in the yard outside. Use it to enter the mansion. Inside, the mansion is dark — press F to toggle your flashlight.
Explore rooms to find keys that unlock new areas. Each key is color-coded to match its door. Some rooms contain items and clues.
Ghosts and monsters patrol the hallways. They’ll chase you if you get too close. Getting caught costs you health — if it hits zero, it’s game over.
Find the Escape Key and make it back to the front door to win. Your score is based on how many rooms you explored and how fast you escaped.

Yes. On a phone you get a virtual joystick to move plus on-screen buttons for interacting and for the flashlight, so nothing needs a keyboard. Desktop uses WASD with E to interact and F for the light. This answer used to say the game was desktop-only, which stopped being true once the touch controls were added.
You start locked out. The front door key is hidden somewhere in the yard, so the first search happens outside. Once inside, every interior door is colour-coded and opens only to the key that matches it, so progress is a chain: find a key, it opens a wing, that wing holds the next key. The last one is the Escape Key, and finding it is not the end — you still have to get back to the front door with it.
Both, and choosing between them is most of the game. The mansion is dark enough that you will miss keys without it. But ghosts notice the light from considerably farther away than they notice you, so a lit room is a room that has announced itself. Short bursts to read a corner, then off again, is how it is meant to be played.
They walk fixed patrol routes and ignore you until you enter their detection range, at which point they commit. Because the routes are set rather than random they are learnable — a room that killed you once is survivable the third time. Moving fast makes noise and widens that detection range, so hurrying past a patrol is usually worse than waiting for it.
It costs health rather than ending the run outright. Health reaching zero is game over, so you can absorb a mistake or two but not a habit of them. There is no combat — nothing in the mansion can be fought, only avoided.
Yes, and it is the moment the game turns. Enemy activity increases the instant it is in your hands, so the route back is more dangerous than the route in. Working out your exit before you take it is the difference between a finished run and dying with the key.
On how much of the mansion you explored and how quickly you escaped. Those pull against each other on purpose: a dash along the shortest path scores badly on exploration, and a thorough sweep of every room costs time. A good score needs a route that does both.
