Combsnap

One honeycomb. Every piece has a place.

Featured in: Free Online Games to Play with Friends in a Browser, Free Daily Browser Games — A New Challenge Every Day

A daily packing puzzle built on a honeycomb. Twelve pieces made of fused beads sit on a staggered grid where every bead touches six neighbours, not four — so pieces rotate six ways and mirror, and the shape you need is rarely the shape you are looking at. Each day generates one board, identical for every player, and opens it up across five stages: three pieces to place, then five, seven, nine, and finally eleven, with the same honeycomb emptying further each time. Every puzzle is built backwards from a finished board, so a solution always exists — and usually more than one, since any legal packing counts. Faster is worth more, hints cost points, and only your first run of the day is ranked. Plays with a finger on a phone or a mouse on desktop.

How to Play Combsnap

Fill every empty socket on the honeycomb. Drag a piece out of the tray, rotate or flip it until it matches the gap, and drop it in — a green outline means it fits, red means it overlaps or hangs off the board.

The grid is triangular, not square: each bead touches six others, so a piece has up to six rotations and a mirrored version of each. Symmetrical pieces have fewer, and flipping one of those does nothing.

There are five stages a day and they share one board. Stage one hands you three pieces to place; each stage after lifts more out, until the last leaves you eleven and an almost empty comb.

Nothing is ever unwinnable. Every board is generated by filling it completely and then lifting pieces off, so a packing always exists — and most stages can be finished several different ways, so your answer does not have to match the one it was built from.

You score 200 points per piece placed plus a speed bonus worth up to 100 more, decaying to nothing after thirty seconds per piece. A hint places one correct piece and costs 150. A flawless, instant run is 10,500.

Combsnap Strategy Guide

  1. Every piece is four or five beads, so a sealed-off gap of 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 or 11 beads can never be filled by anything. If a move strands a pocket of one of those sizes, it is already wrong — undo it rather than working around it.
  2. Start where the board has the fewest options: tight corners and the ragged ends of the hole, not the wide open middle. A bead with only one piece that can reach it is a free move.
  3. Place the stubborn pieces early. The straight rod needs four beads in a line and the wide blobs need open space; leave them until last and the leftover gap is usually the wrong shape.
  4. Pick a piece back up rather than resetting. Tapping a placed piece lifts it with its rotation intact, so you can shuffle two pieces around each other without losing the rest of the stage.
  5. The speed bonus decays over thirty seconds per piece, so an eleven-piece stage still pays a bonus five minutes in. Take the time to look — a hint costs 150, which is more than the bonus you save by rushing into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Combsnap?

Combsnap is a free daily packing puzzle you play in your browser. Twelve pieces made of fused beads have to be fitted into a honeycomb board so that every socket is filled. Every player gets the same board each day, and it opens up across five stages — three pieces to place, then five, seven, nine, and finally eleven. A run takes about five to ten minutes.

Is Combsnap free?

Yes, Combsnap is completely free to play in your browser. No download, no signup, no paywall.

How do you play Combsnap?

Drag a piece out of the tray and drop it on the board. A green outline means it fits; red means it overlaps another piece or hangs off the edge. Rotate with R and Q or the on-screen buttons, and flip a piece with F. The grid is triangular, so every bead touches six neighbours and each piece has up to six rotations plus a mirrored version of each. Tap a piece you have already placed to pick it back up.

Can a Combsnap puzzle be impossible?

No. Every board is generated by filling the honeycomb completely and then lifting pieces back off, so a packing is guaranteed to exist before you ever see the puzzle. Most stages can be finished in more than one way — any legal packing counts, not just the one the board was built from.

How is the score calculated?

Each stage pays 200 points per piece placed, plus a speed bonus worth up to 100 more per piece that decays to nothing after thirty seconds per piece. Every hint costs 150 points. A perfect, instant run of all five stages is 10,500. Only your first completed run of the day is ranked — a puzzle you have already solved can be repeated from memory, so replays stay playable but unranked.

Does Combsnap work on mobile?

Yes. Combsnap is built portrait-first: the board turns a quarter turn on a phone so it fills the tall screen, and pieces are dragged with a finger. The piece you are carrying is lifted above your fingertip so you can see where it will land.
