Steamline has 4 train types: Freight (balanced), Express (fast, low capacity), Heavy (slow, high capacity), and Passenger (earns fares at cities).
Because the map is the puzzle. The rails are already laid when you arrive, but industrial gates block most corridors and the only way through is to build the right industry — constructing a facility opens the line beyond it. Expansion is never a question of laying track; it is working out which building unlocks the route you want.
A Sawmill or a Flour Mill. Both are cheap enough to afford early and both open key corridors, which matters more at that stage than what they produce. An expensive industry built before the network can feed it is money that has stopped moving.
Raw resources are worth little; processed goods are worth a lot. Trains collect raw materials from resource stations, drop them at an industry, and the industry turns them into something worth delivering to a city. Cities also publish demand lists, and delivering something a city is actually asking for pays a 50% bonus.
Lumber into a Sawmill makes planks; planks and steel into a Factory make machinery, the highest-value good in the game. Each step adds value, so the longer the chain you can keep supplied, the more every train is carrying.
By score — Canada at 5,000 points and Europe at 15,000. The later regions are a reward for making the first one work rather than somewhere to escape to when it stalls.
Yes. The 1, 2 and 3 keys set game speed, and mobile has speed buttons. Trains take real time to cross the map, so most of the game is deciding what to do next and then fast-forwarding until it happens.
