Weftword

Build the chain. Beat the constraints.

Play Weftword — free, in your browser

Weftword is a free daily word chain game for your browser where every word you play rewrites the rules of the next turn. Each turn hands you a few threads to follow: one link thread that reads the word you just played — start with its last letter, be one letter longer, share none of its letters, change exactly one of its letters — plus one or two fixed threads such as exactly six letters, no E, a double letter or two vowels side by side, and an optional gold bonus thread. Type a word that satisfies them all and it is woven into the chain. Because the link thread is filled in by your own word, the game is about planning: as you type, the next turn’s card fills in live, showing exactly what your word would ask of the one after it, and how many everyday words would still fit. Turns where few words fit are Tight and score double. Meeting a bonus thread or clearing a Tight turn earns Weave, which you can spend to glimpse the turn after next, reroll a turn’s fixed threads, or unpick your last word. Break a thread and it frays; three frays snap the chain. And the game never lets you into an impossible position: a word that no everyday chain could follow to the end is refused as a snag, at no cost. One daily chain of seven words, the same for everyone, on a daily leaderboard; an Endless chain that tightens as it grows; past chains to replay; and a one-minute guided lesson. Every daily is checked by machine before you see it — an exhaustive search proves it can be finished with everyday words.

How to Play Weftword

A chain starts with one word. Each turn shows its threads: one link thread, which reads the word before it (start with its last letter, be one letter longer, share no letter with it, change exactly one of its letters...), and one or two fixed threads (exactly 5 letters, no E, a double letter, two vowels side by side...). Type a real word — three letters or more, no names or abbreviations — that satisfies every thread, and it joins the chain.

Momentum: the word you play fills in the next turn’s link thread. The Next card under the word field shows that turn changing as you type — what it would ask, and how many everyday words would fit it. The turn after next stays hidden unless you Glimpse it.

Tension: every turn is Loose, Taut or Tight, from how many everyday words fit it — 150 or more, 40 to 149, or fewer than 40. A word scores 10 points a letter (up to 10 letters), times 1, 1.5 or 2 for the turn’s tension. So a word that leaves the next turn Tight is worth more — if you can find a word for it.

The gold bonus thread is optional: meet it for +40 points and a Weave. Clearing a Tight turn also earns a Weave. You start with one and can hold three.

Spend a Weave to Glimpse the turn after next, to Reroll this turn’s fixed threads (they swap for an alternate that is the same for every player; the link thread never changes, and a reroll is only offered when the chain can still be finished), or to Unpick your last word. Unpicking also takes back any Weave that word earned.

A real word that breaks a thread is a fray, and the game names every thread it broke. Three frays snap the chain. A word that is not in the dictionary, one already in the chain, or a snag costs nothing.

A snag is a word that fits but that no everyday chain could follow to the end. The game refuses it before it is played, so you can never be left in an impossible position — when you are stuck, there is always a word, even if you have not thought of it.

Finishing the daily adds 200, finishing without a fray or an unpick another 150, and each Weave left over 25. One daily chain, the same for everyone, changing at midnight UTC: only your first attempt is ranked, and it is saved after every word.

Weftword Strategy Guide

  1. Read the Next card before you press Weave. If it says only a handful of words would fit, make sure you know one.
  2. Watch your last letter. Ending on X, Q, J or Z is a strong way to make the next turn Tight — and a strong way to strand yourself if you cannot think of a word.
  3. Long words score more, but a long word gives a “one letter longer” or “shares no letter” thread a lot to work with. Short words keep options open.
  4. Glimpse early. Seeing two turns ahead is what lets you plan a word that suits both.
  5. Save a Weave for an Unpick. It is the only way back from a word that left you stuck.

Questions & Answers

What is Weftword?

Weftword is a free daily word chain game that runs in your browser. You build a chain of words, each one satisfying a turn’s threads — rules such as start with the last letter of the word before, exactly six letters, or no E. The twist is momentum: the word you play fills in part of the next turn’s rules, so every choice shapes what comes after it.

Is Weftword free?

Yes. No login, no paywall, no download. Open the page and play.

What are threads?

The rules for one turn. Every turn has one link thread that reads the word before it — start with its last letter, end with its last letter, be one letter longer or shorter, use three of its letters, share none of its letters, start later in the alphabet, or change exactly one of its letters — and up to two fixed threads about length, first and last letters, particular letters, vowels, repeated letters or the second letter. A gold bonus thread is optional.

Which words can I play?

Any real English word of three letters or more, including plurals and other inflected forms. Names, abbreviations, hyphenated words and contractions are not accepted. A word that is not in the dictionary, or that is already in your chain, is refused and costs nothing.

Can I get stuck with no possible word?

No. Before a word is accepted the game searches every continuation, and a word that no chain of everyday words could follow to the end is refused as a snag, free. Every daily is also proved finishable before it is published. You can still get stuck for want of an idea — that is what Unpick is for.

What is Weave?

A resource you earn by meeting a bonus thread or clearing a Tight turn. You start with one and hold up to three. Spend one to glimpse the turn after next, to reroll a turn’s fixed threads (to an alternate that is the same for everyone, and only when the chain can still be finished), or to unpick your last word. Unpicking takes back any Weave that word earned, and each Weave left at the end is worth 25 points.

How does scoring work?

Each word scores 10 points a letter, up to 10 letters, multiplied by the turn’s tension: 1 for a Loose turn (150 or more everyday words fit), 1.5 for Taut (40 to 149) and 2 for Tight (fewer than 40). A bonus thread adds 40. Finishing the daily adds 200, finishing without a fray or an unpick adds 150, and leftover Weave adds 25 each.

What happens if I break a rule?

The word frays the chain and the game tells you exactly which threads it broke. Three frays snap the chain and the attempt ends. Frays cost the clean-chain bonus.

How often is there a new chain?

Every day at midnight UTC, the same chain for every player, on a daily leaderboard. Only your first attempt each day is ranked, and it resumes exactly where you left it if you close the tab. Past chains are there for unranked practice, and Endless is one chain that never ends and tightens as it grows.

Does the shared result give the answer away?

No. It shows one mark per word — how tight its turn was — with your score, bonuses and frays, and never a word, so you can post it without spoiling the day.

Can I play with a keyboard or a screen reader?

Yes. Everything works from the keyboard, every result is announced, and threads, tension and broken rules are told apart by words and marks, never by colour alone. Animations stop when your device asks for reduced motion.
